Featured Projects
From time to time we like to highlight some of our key projects, be it future projects or current. This month we are featuring three very impactful projects we have just been approved to deploy in South Sudan and Somalia.
South Sudan:
Kissito Healthcare International has recently submitted a consolidated appeal to the United Nations Office of Coordinated Humanitarian Affairs to provide life saving emergency nutrition services and local healthcare capacity strengthening for malnourished mothers and children in the states of Jonglie and Lakes South Sudan.
KHI’s appeal is one of only 27 approved by the UNOCHA. If funded the work will commence for one year starting sometime in 2013.
The need for help in Jonglie and lakes is great. In collaboration with Plan International and local health care services KHI would be able to address the following needs to achieve it’s objectives in the fight against wide spread malnutrition and weakened healthcare systems:

Somalia
Kissito Healthcare International has recently submitted a consolidated appeal to the United Nations Office of Coordinated Humanitarian Affairs to increase access to high impact emergency obstetric care and routine reproductive maternal and newborn child health services in Garowe and Bossaso.
KHI’s appeal is one of only 27 approved by the UNOCHA. If funded the work will commence for three years starting sometime in 2013.
The appeal proposes two distinctly different programs with their objectives both being to achieve the Millennium Development Goals four and five:
-
Reduce childhood mortality
-
Improve maternal death
The first program will address the need for emergency nutrition services to prevent malnutrition amongst mothers, fathers and children equally in the population center called Puntland. Through the following interventions and support KHI and its local partners believe these goals are obtainable.
Proposed interventions and support:
-
Rapid assessments
-
Establishment of stabilization centers for mothers and children
-
Establishment of outpatient therapeutic programs
-
Supplementary feeding programs
-
Community outreach and education
-
Capacity building of local health workers
-
Improved health management information systems
-
Child protective services
-
Distribution of micro-nutrient supplements
-
Establish a link between nutrition, health, water and sanitation, education, and food security
-
Coordination of local partners and government health services
Somalia Health
The second proposed program will take place at Garowe Regional Referral Hospital. Again the goals and objectives are tied to the Millennium Development goals 4 and 5. With no transportation services, weak healthcare systems, and poor supply chain management the state of Garowe is in peril. The following interventions over a three year period of time will be the focus of Somalia Health:
Proposed interventions and support:
-
Procurement of motorcycle ambulances to create transportation system
-
Insuring the sufficient staffing of the hospital
-
Treatment of malnourished children and lactating mothers
-
Enhancing emergency services through the improvement of surgical services
-
Improvement of supply chain management
-
Ensuring cold chain management is in place
-
Establishing clinical protocols, information systems, and staffing models
-
Engagement and participation of the community
